Girls Inc. OC is continually offering programs to help the girls affiliated with them to be Strong, Smart and Bold. Part of this effort entails educating young women to be prepared to go out into the world with the tools they need for success. One key tool is knowing how to manage their money.
On March 7, 2019, Girls Inc OC in conjunction with Pimco Investment Management held a financial literacy and life-skills workshop, including speed mentoring and career advice. Participants received a financial literacy workbook and training in the areas of budgeting, types of accounts, saving, managing debit and credit cards, and types of interest. They also learned about Fico scores, paying taxes and applying for financial aid and scholarships.
Pimco staff scheduled rounds of speed mentoring where participants utilized their communication skills to learn about the staff members’ various careers and gained important advice about setting goals and exploring their career interests, as well as taking the right classes and participating in varied extracurricular activities.
The program ended with each participant making a mock budget, planning for unexpected expenses and including savings targets in their financial plans. Participants will now encounter financial decision making, prepared with these valuable skills and information.
