The pups lead the pack: Freshmen on varsity water polo

Diving right into the school year, Northwood athletics welcomes some promising new talent to the fields, courts, pool and more. Though they may be the youngest and newest to Northwood, a few key freshmen are rising to the top on the playing field.

As the fall season looms around, Boys Varsity Water Polo welcomes new skill just in the nick of time. After a summer camp full of hard work followed by tryouts, freshmen Leo Giessmann and Danny Kim have proven to be assets to the team. Both are incredibly driven and hope to improve on their skills by the end of the season.

“My goals are just to get better,” Kim said. “I want to be faster at swimming so that I can score more.”

After losing eight seniors from the previous school year, Boys Water Polo will depend on Giessmann and Kim to make an impact in the pool. Fortunately for the team, these boys have specific ambitions for the the season, and are ready for a season full of hard work.

“My goal is to score 35 goals, and have 60 assists and 60 steals,” Giessmann said.

From the very start of their high school experience, Giessmann and Kim are extremely fortunate to have the experience of being an integral part of a team with impressive athletic ability but also other teammates with good character. For the next four years of high school, they will be able to create lasting bonds with their teammates, improve on their skills, and develop their relationship with their coach.

“Hanging out with great players is my favorite part of the varsity experience as a whole,” Giessmann said.

Both Giessmann and Kim are ready to take on varsity level competition after having played water polo for four years. Winning the Pacific Coast League Championship in 2004 and 2013 and appearing in two back to back CIF Division 1 championships, Boys Varsity Water Polo has proven its potential; Giessmann, Kim, and the rest of the team will work hard to continue to uphold the legacy of such a driven team.
